Mitsubishi

On Friday 24th March, the Eco Council went on our Mitsubishi trip. Having won their ‘Eco School of the Year’ competition in 2016, we were excited to see what was in store for us this year.

We took part in a wide range of activities, starting with some classroom-based work on percentages of energy usage. We then went out to visit the Tiger Worms in the wormery – we’ve got our one all ready to get going, but the children hadn’t realised how bad they smell!

We then split into groups and worked around three different activities – using solar panels and focusing on solar energy, learning about the heat pumps and using water heat, and water usage and wastage. Did you know that leaving your tap on whilst you are brushing your teeth can waste up to 9 litres of water?!

The children had a great time and represented the school fantastically. Stay tuned to hear what we get up to next!

Merry Christmas from Eco Council

The Eco Council have been working hard this term to help to develop brilliant environments both at our school and in the wider community. We’ve done litter picks, planting trees and lots of planning for our school grounds now that the scaffolding is down!

Keep an eye out for all of our adventures after the Christmas holidays as the resources we bought using our Mitsubishi prize winnings will be arriving and put to good use!

Merry Christmas!

Let’s get digging…

Today Eco Council went on a visit to Heartwood forest to plant some trees. Heartwood Forest is the biggest man made forest in the country, and they are currently trying to fill an area the size of 80 football pitches! So we went along to help…

We walked up to meet Tim and Chris, who were our leaders for this activity. Our year 1 representatives were some of the youngest helpers they’ve had! They set us a challenge to plant 100 Field Maple trees, which are brilliant for nesting birds.  So, we set to work…

Thanks to the hard work and dedication of our Swallow Dell Eco Council, we were able to plant approximately 130 trees for the Woodland Trust in just under 1 hour! It will be very interesting to see how tall those trees grow over the next few years!

A massive thank you to all of our Eco Council Representatives (particularly the year 5 and 6 children who helped the younger ones fantastically!), and particularly to Mr Rose, Mrs Kane and Mr Dossett for giving up their mornings to accompany us!

Ready to tackle litter…

For lots of different reasons, there has been real difficulty getting all of the Swallow Dell Eco Councillors together so far this year, with trips, meetings and assemblies. But I am proud to be able to introduce you to our Swallow Dell Eco Councillors 2016-17!

We have lots of things coming up to look forward to! Next Tuesday, we are going to Heartwood Forest to plant trees, and we’re already thinking about our trip to Mitsubishi early next term.

As you will be aware, we have been having lots of work done to our roof. Gradually the scaffolding is coming down, so we will be doing lots of litter picks to make sure our playgrounds and gardens are as clean as our new roof!

Check back next week to hear all about our trip to Heartwood Forest!

Eco Council Water Survey

Swallow Dell’s Eco Council have been busy evaluating our school environment and how to improve it, as we are aiming to achieve an Eco Schools Award. One area we are focusing on is water. We would be very grateful if you would take the time to complete this survey for us!

Water Use in the Home Survey

The Eco Team are taking part in a education programme with Affinity Water looking at how we use water in the home and in school. The results of this survey forms an important part of the project the students will be working on.  Please answer as honestly as you can, all answers are anonymous. It should take no longer than 5 minutes to complete. Thank you for your help.
