Textiles week!

For the last weeks of term, we have enjoyed getting creative in textiles week making various things from wool and fabric. We all had a great time. Here are some pictures…

Note to parents:

The tie-dye t-shirts have been washed already to set the colours, however we advise that you wash them separately for a few following washes.

Thank you,

Ancient Greek Day

On Wednesday 6th June, Year 3 had an Ancient Greek Day to launch our new topic. We held Ancient Olympic games, including javelin, long jump, discus, running races and (arm) wrestling. We also made traditional Greek clay vases and had a feast full of Greek delicacies! The children enjoyed tasting new foods and trying new activities. We were dressed in tunics and made leaf laurels for our heads. Thank you to the parents that supported us on the day! Hope you enjoy the photos!

Year 3’s Ancient Egyptian Day

On Tuesday 27th February, we had a fun-filled Ancient Egyptian Day with a lady that came in to share lots of activities. Here are some of the things we did.

We mummified pegs. We put the paste on the peg then wrapped linin around it to make it mummified.

To make canopic jars, we got two lumps of clay. One was smaller than the other. The smallest one we made into a head and the biggest one was the actual jar. We put hieroglyphs on the jar and moulded the head to an Egyptian animal.

We tested out some games such as Senet by using counters and a board.

The paint looked dark at first but then it got light. The painting was colourful. The paint was very runny like water. It was Egyptian paint. We made bracelets using clay and string. We had help to make ink to write hieroglyphics on papyrus. Most of us dressed up in Ancient Egyptian costumes. Lots of people were pharaohs. We had Anubis, slaves, mummies…it was so much fun. First we bashed the olives then put all the olive oil into the pot. We got some wick and lit it to see how long the oil burnt for. We made wax pots for perfume by crunching up some stuff and made a pot from clay. We poured the wax in our pots and left them to dry.  We carved scarab beetles out of soap. We had a small stick to carve with. We started with some flour and grinded some seeds. Then we poured some water into the bowl and shared the dough between everyone. Each person kneaded their dough to make the salt bread.  Slaves gave us food like cheese, grapes and bread and drink that we had in goblets. In the afternoon, we did role play and acted out the Festival of the River Nile. Two people dressed up as a pharaoh and a queen and there were some slaves and entertainment acts.Thank you parents for costumes and helping on the day. We had an amazing time!

Making Jam Sandwiches

Silver Birch have been learning about instruction texts in English and we wrote some instructions for how to make a jam sandwich. The next day, the children had to follow the instructions exactly as they were written to check they had all the details they need. The results were interesting! Some definitely needed more information such as using a knife to spread the butter and jam. We got a bit messy but some jam sandwiches turned out well and rather tasty!
